Aldershot’s Under 11s coaches reacted with delight on receiving their Puma rain jackets in recognition of winning the first Under 11s prize draw.  The jackets were awarded to Clive Asprey, Rebecca Heath, Elin Loftesnes and Caroline Mawhinney at a training session with Ian Jennings due to receive his jacket later in the week.

Clive Asprey said, “We were surprised to win the draw and we couldn’t do this without the great back up from Lynne Anthony who takes care of the administration.”  The club offers 3 sessions for under 11s each week and have 35 athletes in the group.

AFD U11 prizeRebecca and Caroline decided to help out whilst their own children train at the club and are now Coaching Assistants.   Elin (pictured), a key helper at the sessions, has three children participating; one in each of the QuadKids group, the Athletics 365 group and the Endurance group.

John Delaine is the Coaching Coordinator at the club and he ensures that there are sufficient coaches within the coaching structure by holding a Coaching Assistant Course at the club on an annual basis.  This took place last weekend and the club is delighted to have a further fourteen Coaching Assistants.  The next target is to get them through the Athletics Coach Course and to plug one or two gaps in events.

Twice yearly parent induction sessions are held to encourage new parents to get involved.  Sharon Pocknee, the club’s Membership Secretary has over 600 athletes on their books and Mike Neighbour says they are now on top of the steady influx of new athletes since the Olympics.

England Athletics is holding a series of prize draws where clubs with registered Under 11s can win items from the England Athletics store, plus there will be an opportunity for a club to be visited by an international athlete.  At the end of each month a registration number for an under 11 athlete who has been registered as part of the England Athletics Under 11s scheme will be chosen at random. Their club will then be contacted and given the opportunity to choose five items of clothing or eyewear from the England Athletics online store.*

At the end of the affiliation year (which ends on 31 March) Clubs who have registered Under 11 athletes will have the opportunity to win a visit from an international athlete. For the prize draw at the end of March a registration number for an Under 11 athlete will again be chosen, and this time their club will be contacted to arrange for the athlete’s visit.

England Athletics Chief Executive Chris Jones said, “Our over 11 athletes enjoy a benefits package which they receive details of, along with their competition licence, each year. We hope that these prize draws will help show our support for clubs who cater for our youngest athletes.  Whether the club chooses to use the kit for those involved in delivering the sport to their under 11s or in another way we are pleased to show this support.”
