Masters Road Relays
AFD Vet men travelled to Sutton Park for the British Masters Road Relays Championships on Saturday May 14th. The weather was cold in the morning, however the sun rose and we were treated to a glorious warm, sunny Spring day. The V45-54 race was pretty hot too! AFD, Champions last year in this age group were determined to defend their title with grit and determination and did so in spades! However the might of Thames Hare and Hounds reduced us to silver, still a fabulous achievement
Mark Symes running first came home in 4th place in 15.46, the 5th fastest time of the day; Paul Gaylor ran solidly on 2nd with a 16.44, a 20 second PB on this course; Darren Symes ran 16.41 taking us to 2nd with only 4 seconds separating the first 3 teams going into the last leg; Scott Smith Bannister threw everything into his run and held the lead for most of his leg only to be passed by Andy Weir from Thames Hare and Hounds in the closing stages. Scott ran 16:12 and finished just 9 seconds behind first and only 21 seconds separated the first three teams-evidence that this age group is becoming fiercely competitive.
In the V55-64 race Austin Soane finished leg 1 in 4th place in 17.31, the 8th fastest on the day, impressive as at 62 he is giving away 7 years to many of those in front; Tony Davies finished in 13th with a fine 20.23. Sadly we couldn’t finish a team due to injury.
A big thank you to all the athletes who made the effort to support this event. See you all next year!
