Isobel Pooley improved her British outdoor high jump record when retaining the national title in Birmingham on Saturday. Her first-time clearance at 1m 97 was one centimetre higher than the mark she recorded last year. Silver medallist Morgan Lake of Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow, the World junior champion, had gone out of the competition at 1m 88.
Pooley’s victory was one of three claimed by athletes from Aldershot, Farnham & District at the meeting over the weekend. Steph Twell outkicked Laura Whittle of Royal Sutton Coldfield, a fellow competitor at last year’s Commonwealth Games, in the 5000 metres after the pair had broken away from rest with a lap and a half remaining. The bronze medallist was Kate Avery (Shildon) who was runner-up in December’s European cross country championships.
Lennie Waite, the only sub-10 minute performer entered for the women’s 3000 metres steeplechase, won her race by nearly fifteen seconds. AFD’s Andy Vernon had to settle for second in his 5000 metres to Cumbria’s Tom Farrell, a team mate in both Commonwealth Games and European championships last season.
