At the AFD AGM on the 25 Jan in addition to the normal business of adoption of accounts and election of officers (incidently the club are always short of officials, coaches and general helpers) the club made a new apointment of David Betts as Honorary Club Chaplain:
David has prepared a short bio reproduced below:
It’s always hard to know where to start when asked to write a (short) bio about oneself……so let’s start right from the beginning…….I love chocolate J. I am also an Essex boy of the 60’s, born in Chelmsford and for 25 years I lived in a small town called Braintree……which is between Colchester and Stanstead if your geography is not too brilliant.
My claim to fame (other than being friends with the new OXO advert “mum”) is that I was a founder member of my church’s playgroup (not that I knew much about it as I was only 2 at the time).
I have been working as part of the Aldershot Garrison Chaplaincy Team for 23 years and my work includes such things as school assemblies, various Mums and Toddler groups, after school clubs, RE lessons, Unit and Battalion coffee mornings, “one to one” work in some of the Garrison Schools, pre-school assemblies. “Who Let The Dads Out” dads and kids group……… and generally looking after families in the military community.
I have a number of passions, one being drumming…….I have not missed any of the yearly London drum shows over the last 16 years….and play drums as often as I can. I also love photography and will not be too far away from my camera.
I want to say that I consider it to be a great honour to be asked to be your Honorary Chaplain and I look forward to getting to know the AFD Athletics Club family over the next few months.
If you see me a round do come over and say hello and introduce yourself.
So what does a Chaplain in the club context do? Well the drumming skills could be useful to get a rhythm going during events. On a serious side David is very well connected particularly with the Military. From the point of the membership he will around for any members to chat with generally and more particullary to discuss any personal, emotional issies or indeed any issue connected with the club. Hopefull a useful complement to our welfare team.
