Saturday 16th January was icy cold Sutcliffe park, East London the AFD race walking team competed in the 2016 Southern Championships. First races combined all young age groups, where AFD dominated the medal positions.Racer of the day is difficult to choose - I think there were several outstanding performances however, three notable mentions.First goes to debut racer Izzy Elliott winning gold over 2km in u13s with 12.41,second best performance was Tim Snook lone racing in the u20s stamped his authority to beat all the seniors and finished with a huge PB in 49.27 and finally Abi Jennings gaining silver in the u17s and Improved her 5km to go under 30mins with 29.44. The rest of the team were equally as successful, in u15s Anna Hinchcliff finished with silver another PB 21.01 so close to breaking the 21 min barrier and debut 3km by Emma Ratcliffe, not keen on racing finished in Bronze and a credible 21.58 and most importantly with a smile. Newly moved up to u17, Katie Elliott also on her debut 5km was awarded Bronze in a fantastic 31.55. Returning from injury Chris Snook dominated the u17 age groups by winning his race leading his nearest competitor by over 4 mins in 24.03. The final race saw senior woman and vet (w35) Penel Cummings awarded a silver medal finishing strongly to get 58.56 for 10km.What a great days racing said coach, team manager, and also judge Verity Snook.
